Does the teeth whitening treatment have side-effects?

DepiCool uses a cosmetic (not orthodontic) teeth whitening system which relies on a combination of light and a low concentration of peroxide, especially when compared to traditional whitening treatments. This reduces the probability of suffering any temporary side-effects, which is very low anyway.

In some individuals the following side-effects can occur from the hydrogen peroxide treatment:

  • Increased sensitiveness of the teeth. After the end of treatment, this sensation may last for a few hours or days.
  • Irritation of the gums or other mucous areas which come into contact with the peroxide. This will normally subside in a few hours after the mouth is washed out at the end of the treatment, but in some cases the irritation may persist for a few days.
  • You should never over-treat the teeth with hydrogen peroxide as this can damage your teeth. Overexposure can cause enamel reduction or loss which may cause the teeth to become hypersensitive and vunerable to damage. You should not have teeth whitening treatment more than twice a year.

For effective teeth whitening to take place, it is important to treat healthy teeth. It is not possible to treat individuals with certain dental or medical conditions. Peroxide does not act on porcelain or ceramic dental implants, although it may have an effect on organic stains on the surface of such an implant. The treatment can affect dental implants based on composite materials. If you have implants, fillings or any type of dental condition, we recommend you ask your dentist whether you can have this treatment.
